What are the key challenges facing discretionary fund managers in the UK?

We’re finding that the following are key challenges:
- Macroeconomic uncertainty: The ongoing geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and confusion over the direction of inflation rates have created a challenging macroeconomic environment for investors. This uncertainty has led to increased market volatility and made it difficult for investment managers to generate consistent returns.
- Regulatory changes: The UK government and FCA continue to seek regulatory changes, including Consumer Duty, the Edinburgh Reforms, etc which could have a significant impact on the investment management industry. There is concern that these changes could increase costs, reduce competition, and limit the availability of investment products.
- Rising costs: The cost of doing business in the UK is increasing, which is putting pressure on investment managers’ profitability. This is particularly true for smaller firms that may not have the scale to absorb higher costs.
- Competition from passive investment strategies: Passive investment strategies, such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs), have become increasingly popular in recent years. This competition is putting pressure on discretionary investment managers to justify their fees and demonstrate the value they add to clients’ portfolios.
- Technological disruption: The rise of technology is disrupting the investment management industry. This includes the development of new investment products, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to make investment decisions, and the increasing reliance on digital channels to interact with clients.
We’re finding that DFM’s are addressing these challenges in a number of ways:
- Diversify their investment portfolios: By regularly reviewing strategic and tactical asset allocation and considering alternatives, investment managers aim to reduce their exposure to risk and improve their chances of generating positive returns.
- Focus on ESG investing: With increasing governmental and regulatory encouragement environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing is becoming increasingly important to investors. Some investment managers have concluded that a commitment to ESG principles can attract more clients and differentiate themselves from their competitors.
- Invest in technology: Technology can help investment managers improve their efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the client experience. This includes the use of AI to make investment decisions, digital channels to interact with clients, and cloud-based platforms to manage their operations.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients: In an increasingly competitive market, it is essential for investment managers to have robust relationships with their clients. This means providing excellent customer service, communicating effectively, and understanding clients’ needs and objectives.
By considering these key challenges and opportunities, discretionary fund managers can position themselves for success.
